On a mild Wednesday in early March, we were invited to Sudbury to take a tour of the\u00a0<\/span>Favorich<\/span>\u00a0factory and learn about their<\/span>\u00a0history and<\/span>\u00a0upcoming\u00a0<\/span>product\u00a0<\/span>launches<\/span>. Everybody\u2019s Talking About Favorich <\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Arriving at the\u00a0Favorich\u00a0facility in Suffolk, we instantly noticed the\u00a0interesting shape of the building, and it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0long before we heard the story behind it.\u00a0Favorich\u00a0took the factory over from Philips Avent, the baby bottle manufacturer, back in\u00a02023. The building had originally been designed to mimic the shape of a baby bottle, and\u00a0Favorich\u00a0decided to keep the bare bones of the original factory, including its unique shape, and completely renovate the inside for their\u00a0brand-new\u00a0chocolate factory.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Sudbury facility has the\u00a0additional\u00a0benefit of being surrounded by fields of sugar beet, which\u00a0provide\u00a0the sugar that makes\u00a0Favorich\u2019s\u00a0chocolate. We also learned that the stream behind the site is home to a type of endangered dragonfly, topping off the idyllic location!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Peek Behind the Chocolate Curtain<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After being handed our visitor lanyards and guided to a\u00a0<\/span>bright,\u00a0<\/span>modern meeting room, we were introduced to\u00a0<\/span>our Account Manager, Kirsten, who presented the history of GCB Cocoa and\u00a0<\/span>Favorich<\/span>\u00a0to us.\u00a0<\/span>Favorich<\/span>\u00a0is a brand with one foot firmly rooted in tradition, and the other is stepping into the next\u00a0<\/span>chapter of chocolate.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Creating the new facility from scratch gave\u00a0Favorich\u00a0the opportunity to\u00a0build in\u00a0future-proofing\u00a0from the beginning. The factory currently produces 14-18,000MT of dark and milk chocolate, in\u00a0easymelt\u00a0couverture, and\u00a0bake\u00a0stable chip and chunk form, with plans to add white chocolate and other products soon, including cocoa liquor and cocoa butter.\u00a0The\u00a0fully-segregated\u00a0non-dairy production lines also mean their dark chocolates are certified Dairy-Free, and\u00a0are now also Vegan Society registered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We learned about the various food safety certifications GCB Cocoa and\u00a0Favorich\u00a0hold, allowing them to produce chocolate products to meet\u00a0the exacting standards of some of the biggest brands in the UK.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Sustainability is at the heart of everything GCB Cocoa does, from improving farmer livelihoods\u00a0to protecting the environment and increasing transparency across the supply chain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Favorich\u00a0is one of the only chocolate brands that is already compliant with the upcoming European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), thanks to this\u00a0factory in Suffolk and\u00a0a\u00a0brand\u00a0new\u00a0cocoa production facility in Cote d\u2019Ivoire.\u00a0You can read all about the\u00a0new legislation\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>A Guide to the European Deforestation Regulation<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Riding in the Glass Elevator<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The first thing that hits you when you step into the\u00a0Favorich\u00a0factory is the intoxicating\u00a0smell of\u00a0molten chocolate.\u00a0The second is the incredible care with which the whole facility has been planned and executed.\u00a0From the\u00a0spotlessly clean surfaces and\u00a0clever engineering\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0air pressure that forces air out of the non-dairy section into the dairy section, preventing\u00a0these areas from becoming contaminated with\u00a0any milk powder that may\u00a0be in the air.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There may be no glass elevator or river of chocolate, but walking around the\u00a0Favorich\u00a0factory is the closest you can get to feeling like Willy Wonka. With labs and NPD kitchens around every corner,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0clear that\u00a0Favorich\u00a0has one eye on the future of the chocolate industry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What kind of chocolate factory tour would it be without a little taste testing? We were spoiled with\u00a0a huge range\u00a0of applications including bonbons and bars, solid chocolate figures, dipped biscuits, chocolate chip\u00a0muffins\u00a0and brownies.\u00a0We got to sample the entire\u00a0Keylink\u00a0Favorich\u00a0range, which includes 70% and 53% dark chocolates\u00a0as well as a 34% milk chocolate (and a 30% coming soon!), as well as dark and milk chips and chunks, and three varieties of cocoa powder.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The NPD room is like a mini factory within a factory, and the new test kitchen means\u00a0the\u00a0Favorich\u00a0team can create a wide range of products to\u00a0trial before deciding on their next launch. We were lucky enough to try a\u00a0newly developed\u00a0product\u00a0and everyone agreed it was absolutely delicious! All too soon, it was time to thank the\u00a0Favorich\u00a0team and set off back to Yorkshire with a better understanding of the precision engineering it takes to run a chocolate factory\u00a0smoothly (and a bag of chocolate treats for the drive, of course).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>
